On September 4, 2024 (Wednesday) at 9:30am, Professor level Senior Engineer Gong Chunlei from Guizhou Ruimaite New MaterialsCo., Ltd. was invited by the Department of Energy and Power Engineering at theSchool of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, Shanghai University ofEngineering and Technology to give a keynote lecture on "Master'sSupervisor Training". The lecture was attended by graduate supervisorsfrom the Department of Energy and graduate students from the 22nd and 23rdclasses.

Professor Gong first clarified theresponsibilities and obligations of graduate students and supervisors from twoaspects: the role of graduate supervisors and what constitutes a"qualified" graduate student. He pointed out that the words andactions of supervisors have a profound impact on students' thinking patternsand perspectives. Secondly, the key issue of how to provide "scientificresearch training" for graduate students was elucidated through thelisting of different cases.

Next, Professor Gong pointed out thechallenges that are easily encountered in graduate student guidance and therole that mentors should play. He believed that most graduate students needmentors to provide advice and assistance in the early stages of academicresearch, while a small number of "genius graduate students" willpromote mentor thinking and progress. At the same time, establishing a sound graduatestudent association system, promoting academic exchanges, and fostering teamgrowth are also essential key factors. This is an important way to promote theexchange of opinions and sharing of ideas between students and mentors.

In addition, Professor Gong believes thatthe cultivation of students by graduate supervisors should be a leap from"teaching without discrimination" to "teaching and learningtogether". In this process, mentors and students cooperate with eachother, progress together, and become both teachers and friends. At the sametime, mentors should provide suitable platforms for students to continuouslycultivate their research abilities and improve their research level throughpractice.

Finally, the energy department studentsactively asked questions, and Professor Gong provided patient and detailedanswers based on his own insights, creating a relaxed and harmoniousatmosphere. This lecture pointed out the correct mode of interaction betweenmentors and students, which is of great significance for establishing aharmonious and stable teacher-student relationship.
